Swimming is an important part of the Physical Education Curriculum for the children. All children from Junior Infants to 6th class attend swimming lessons, during school hours, each year and make good progress at their swimming as a result.
Our school grounds consist of a football pitch, a basketball court and an all purpose court. The children enjoy a wide range of PE activities as part of the PE curriculum. A qualified football coach instructs all children in the skills of Gaelic football. We finish off the school year with our ‘School League’. The teams are mixed with juniors and seniors together in teams. A 6th class captain encourages the younger children during lunchtime, teaching them how to kick the ball and score goals! The school league is a real success every year, encouraging the smaller children to play and also teaches the older children understanding of the younger children’s needs.
Sports Day is one of the highlights of the school year.
Music is an integral part of school life and is being taught by Miss Lineen, during school hours. As this area has a great tradition of Irish music we nurture this tradition, with the children becoming quite proficient in playing reels, jigs, polkas, hornpipes and slow airs , depending on the level of ability of each child. Children from 1st class to 6th class have the opportunity to choose an instrument to learn i.e fiddle, concertina, tin whistle or button accordion. The children now also have the opportunity to learn set dancing at school.
The children are grouped into baking teams and bake regularly in the kitchen with our wonderful secretary Anne. They also take part in class based baking activities.
In Springtime we get very busy in our garden. Out the wellies come and together we all get busy digging and sowing. We have recently revamped our school garden by painting the flower beds and creating our own fairy gardens. Our beautiful flowers have added colour to the school.
Our children have opportunities to take part in yoga in the school garden with a wonderful local yoga instructor. The children also take part in the “Mindful Moments” programme with class teachers. The children enjoy Weaving Wellbeing webinars online during class time. Spending time outside in the country air and taking part in physical activity promotes wellbeing for us all.
